PSC Squib River Race report Sunday 18 th May
A nice ebbing tide and adequate if gusty wind from the West North West encouraged a near record of 6 participants in a competitive fleet participants
Cab 7 ( jeremy /David Fitzpatrick )
Skybird ( Rainer deputising for owner John Kara now in UK crewed by potential new member Jan Porter
Jerry ( Thomas and new German crew Richard Cropp)
Second Wind ( Charles /Lan)
Alice ( Sebastien and family)
AND A BELATED ENTRY catching up from behind founder member Rama sailing Quicksilver …. And crewed by Patick
The sight of them short tacking in the marina to finally arrive at the allotted pontoon will long remain
Skybirds skipper Rainer wisely suggested starting from the second set of marina poles as with a strong ebbing tide most of the boats had passed the first , Jerry , Skybird and Cab 7 all made good starts and the fleet tacked down the river assisted by the tide, boats tacking the full width of the river lost out to those staying on the north shore , one of the interesting things about sailing at Pulau indah is the tidal complexity with Jerry Skybird and Cab 7 cross tacking Cab 7 rounded Rusty Can the first mark first followed by Jerry and Skybird , Second wind , Alice
late leaving the marina and Quicksilver even later It was another beat out to Selat , the boats who went offshore led by Cab 7 lost out to those which stayed inshore , approaching the mark Jerry crossed well ahead of Cab 7 but sailed too far before rounding allowing Cab 7 to get inside container ships everywhere too , spinnakers flying with a great variety of colours the fleet headed home ,initially the was a nasty chop whether due to the numerous container ship entering and leaving Westport or just seastate ia an open question ,although the leaders closed up the finishing order was Cab 7 Jerry and Skybird , Quicksilver had caught up and finished forth , Second wind fifth
and Alice with Seb and family sixth Squib Sailing at its best It is unusual for all to round Selat but a nice wind and no strong tide made for great sailing The club are starting to take boats out for cleaning for the Squib Nationals on 13, 14 and 15 th June under Race Officer Simon James We do have boats available for charter if anyone is interested

Race Report Squib River Race Sunday 9 th March 2025
4 boats participated John Kara in Skybird with Rainer as crew ,Peter van Acker in Peach 2 with Jamaica as crew , Evan Ho in Emily with wife Yoon as crew and Commodore Jeremy in Cabaret 7 with Lan again press ganged as crew
A minimal difference between low and high tide meant little tide effect as the fleet set off down river but a major lack of wind from the unusual direction giving a run with uncertain gybe made for tough sailing favouring the experienced crews
With benefit of hindsight it would have been better to motor out as the wind did fill in in from usual direction and Skybird and Cab & who had also struggled to progress in fact gone backwards got the new wind and had a great tussle , Skybird in front rounding Rusty Can to the Power Station marker pole and back to Rusty Can , on the beat back to the pole Cab 7 to a flyer up the south shore and covering on starboard rounded first
On the run home in a good breeze Skybird and Cab7 were side by side but in the end Skybird won by a short head , great racing and just sad the other boats didn’t get the wind both retiring

RACE REPORT NAT SQUIB RIVER RACE 2 MARCH 2025
For the first time in 2025 the Squib fleet managed a respectable turnout
Led by Lady VG sailed by RSYC Commodore and PSC founder Rama with crew Harri and son as crew , Emily with Evan and son as crew , Second Wind with Martin C and former member Masako as crew new member Thomas with his newly acquired Jerry with super crew Rainer and Cabaret 7 with PSC Commodore Jeremy and a press ganged Lan as crew
Lady VG and Emily both no sailed for a long time were obviously handicapped with barnacle bottoms , Second Wind had jumped the start and with this extreme tide gone on the sand bank on the south side of the mouth , they could not get off and gave an excellent example of waiting for the tide means eventually returning none the worse , at least the boat should be clean now
Jerry had an excellent start and crossed tacks ahead of Cabaret , neither side seemed favoured and this duel continued to the first mark RUSTY CAN, Cabaret led narrowly round the first mark included to get boats away from the hazardous shallows on the north shore before heading for old friend SELAT , it was a beat in a nice wind , Cabaret seemed to gain going in shore but rounding the mark Jerry was in close attendance with Lady VG was not far behind with Emily bringing up the rear, Second Wind enjoying the view from their sandbank
A nice spinnaker run back with the tide flooding , Jerry and Cabaret on starboard gybe side by side meters apart , no time to avoid 3v fishing nets so just sail over .
Rounding the corner both gybed onto port which favoured Cabaret as she gradually pulled ahead to win by a narrow margin , great compliment to Thomas first time helming his new Squib and smart to have super crew Rainer whose Kittiwich is under repair with a damaged floor
Great sailing in 12 to 15 knots of wind in which our Squibs excel
Hopefully more boats out of our 18 boats ( one top class racing boat Kavara for sale ) will come and enjoy the delights of competitive racing in clean waters
We also have boats to hire particularly for our friends at RSYC and please put bin your diaries our 4 th Squib Nationals on 13.14 and 15 th June

PSCS Race Report SKYBIRD SERIES Race 1 Sunday 23 rd February 2025
In spite of sponsor John Kara s efforts with many being unavailable only SKYBIRD John Kara / Rainer Kloberg and CABARET 7 Jeremy Camps /Hasslan came to the lineWith a slow but adverse tide and a lack of wind the boats motored out to the area of the shipyard where the wind filled in , both started on the south shore and Skybird led at the first cross leaving for the north shore while Cabaret stayed on the south the second cross had Skybird further ahead but with Cabaret working up the north shore she led on the next cross and led out of the river continuing on starboard tack into shallow water , Skybird already on the north shore continued , eventually Cabaret came back whilst Skybird went out , approaching the dreaded SELAT Buoy Cabaret crossed ahead and went further before tacking for the buoy , they were right because Skybird didn’t make it but tacking onto starboard forced Cabaret to tack under her , Skybird rounded first , Cabaret gybed onto Starboard with Skybird on port , but she crossed ahead and inspite of Cabarets efforts held the lead to the line winning by 2 minutesShows that 2 equal one design boats racing against each other can still have great racing Roll on the next race and hopefully more will come to enjoy great sailing in a 12 knot breezeThe Squib fleet welcomes new member Thomas Foeller who has purchased Wolfram Grohe s JERRY , the transfer was performed on Sunday and we appreciated Wolframs attendance on Sunday to explain the boat.
